Having a vision, mission and values in the business is a touchy-feely subject that most builders tend to forego. However, it is what allows a company to grow. It gets your team involved and engaged.
When you get to a certain level where the staff are growing, and you’re getting many people on, the systems and processes (a.k.a. tactics), sometimes can’t keep up. You can’t train them, you can’t build them fast enough.
Vision and Mission
The vision, mission, values are the context as to why the business exists. It reminds you what you’re doing and what you hope to achieve. So if your staff are aware of that, then they know that there are certain kind of rules that they have to act to.
They might not have the system and the process, but they’ll get a good idea of what the bigger picture is of what you’re hoping to achieve. It will also get your team to work together instead of having individualised tactics. A team is basically a group of people with a standard set of values and beliefs.
A lot of builders complain that their team doesn’t do what they expected them to do. It turns out, they don’t have their vision, mission, values set up.
When you only rely on your systems and processes, it could become regimented. Whereas if you put your vision, mission and values into it, that they will allow your team to be enrolled in what you want to achieve. And then they will not come into work just for the paycheck, they’ll come to work to make a difference.
Everybody has different values and beliefs. You got to be clear and consistent in stipulating your values if you want your team to behave the way you want them to.
Most people got into business to either have the lifestyle they want, freedom, time or money. The important thing is, you got to enjoy going to work and not just turn up because it’s a struggle.
If you’re trying to work out what your vision is, there’s an exercise that you use.
You first have to put in mind that YOU started a business. And then ask yourself WHY you started the company. It might be because you want to have some lifestyle changes or you want to be better rewarded for your time and effort. Ask yourself again as to why you want to be better paid? And just keep on asking those whys. Inevitably, people usually end up with two answers which are love and happiness.
A lot of people try to exchange their lifestyle and money to buy ‘happiness’. But if you could make your business enjoyable, you’re basically shortcutting 10 years’ worth of hard work.
Once you have your vision set, it changes your mindset and the energy that you bring to work. Another thing is, use your vision and mission to drive strategy and not tactics.
Here’s an example of what our Vision and Mission are:
Vision – What We Do
“ To share our knowledge and passion to make business enjoyable and successful.”
Mission – Where We Are Going
“To influence behaviour in every trades business globally.”
We basically want to influence behaviour so that people do enjoy their business. We intentionally made the mission unachievable because we don’t want to get to a position where we’ve impacted 10,000 businesses by 2021 and then not knowing what to do in 2022.
Since we wanted to make business enjoyable, we want to implement and teach strategies that even if we don’t personally impact every single construction business on the planet, we’re going to be personally affecting the really successful ones. We basically want what we teach to elevate the industry standards.
The values are your day-to-day actionable stuff. As an example, here are the values that we implement for our internal team in the business.
We are social beings, and this business was created to help others. Make our community THRIVE – show love & respect, be supportive & collaborative, share your knowledge and never let your integrity be questioned.
- License to Fail
This is the cornerstone to our continuous improvement – use your entrepreneurial spirit, be hungry to learn, make that decision, drive to the win and ultimately own the result.
- Infectious Passion
Be courageous, be relentless, be committed, be the one who lights up the room!
- Guide, Motivate and Inspire
Lead your community to their required result with focus and clarity using your vision, strong values, passion and knowledge.
- Know Your Shit
Be hungry to learn, be better than yesterday, dominate your niche.
How to make this useful on day-to-day business is to “eat and breathe” it, talk your vision and mission all the time. Make it appear everywhere in your store. And of course, get your team engaged.
So many people focus the goal on the money. But the reality is if you find your ‘why’, and you hold your team accountable to the ‘why’, you’ll discover autonomy from your people.
They will then understand and care about what YOU care about. The systems and processes will not do that for them. If your team understands and they know the rules of the game, they wouldn’t come to you for every little issue in the business. They would know what to do next. And that’s where your freedom as the business owner comes in.
Another thing that’s cool is when you have your Vision and Mission out, you’ll start to get the people with the same beliefs coming to you. Not just clients, but also employees. Human beings are drawn to groups of people with the same values and beliefs. Also, people would want to work in an environment that’s fun and enjoyable.
