traits of a good businessman
I’ve met a lot of builders and contractors in trade shows and conferences.
All of them wanted the same things: to have the time to do things with their family or friends, to make more money, and to live the lifestyle that they’ve always wanted.
However, the thing that frustrates them the most is HOW to obtain all of those. How can they bring their business to where they want it to be and fast!
Now, I’m going to share with you some tips or hints on how you can make your business into a success. This is for the builders and contractors who need to know how to make it work in the construction industry, and who will do anything to get there.
1. Be Determined
Look at all the businesses out there. Every one of them will go through good times and bad times, but the only ones who stay are the ones who are determined to do whatever it takes.
You know what’s great about starting a business, or anything at all? You are so full of excitement that you think everything is possible and nothing will go wrong.
But something will go wrong, and that’s okay. It’s part of the journey.
If nothing goes wrong, you will never know how to improve what you already have. What you need to have is determination to go through the bad times and to keep on improving even during the good times.
2. Find a Mentor
I think you may have already heard me mention this before, but every successful business person that I know has a mentor that guides and support them.
Why do you need a mentor?
There will be times when you want to give up on your business or times when everything is just a mess, and you don’t know what to do.
Your mentor will be there to remind you what your goal is and to help you patch everything up.
3. Find the Right People for Your Team
No big business was ever created by one person alone. It’s always a product of people who worked together for one goal.
The phrase, “no one can do it as good as me” was never true.
Someone will always be better than you at one thing, and you have to find that person and let them work for you.
Doing everything your way will only hinder you from improving yourself.
And once you have the team that you are looking for, make an effort to keep them motivated. Don’t hire them just to say that you have a team.
Empower them so they can do their job better every time.
4. Become a Businessman
To run a business, you have to become a businessman.
No, I’m not telling you to give up being a builder or contractor. You simply will not be able to create a successful business, if you are not a good businessman in the first place.
Think of it this way, if you are builder or contractor then you are made to run a bakeshop. Do you think you will be able to make the bakeshop successful when you know nothing about baking and running a business?
5. Don’t Be Complacent
This is where most builders and contractors fail.
When they see that their business is working well, they “relax”.
Yes, I know that you want to have the freedom and lifestyle that comes from owning a business.
But that doesn’t mean becoming complacent.
You are, after all, still running a business. And as I have mentioned, there will be a lot of good times and bad. It’s not always constant.
That’s why you have to be always prepared. Always on the lookout.
Nobody said that running a business is easy, it’s not for the weak-willed and faint-hearted.
An extra little tip… Be sure to find the purpose that you want your business to fulfill. If you don’t have a mission, even a simple hiccup will break your business down.
